Project Olmstead

The Center for Independent Living is the proud sponsor of Project Olmstead, an effort to support advocacy for de-institutionalization and community living of people with disabilities. The project’s name comes from the Olmstead Decision, which was a Supreme Court ruling that upheld the right of people with disabilities to live in the community with access to adequate support services.

The World Institute on Disability (WID) will join with CIL as a partner. We will collaborate to plan a series of half day workshops.  Five will feature key subject matter experts who will educate participants about the Olmstead ruling and related topics, while the remaining three will allow new and existing advocates to develop skills and hone messaging regarding community needs as they relate to Olmstead.  At the end of the training series participants will be encouraged to speak before the California State Olmstead Committee, their elected officials in Sacramento, Alameda County and locally.
