Blind Services

CIL provides individualized peer counseling for blind and low vision consumers. Our blind services counselor acts in a lead role to assess needs and develop a plan specific to the goals of the individual. Direct services from the counselor include everything from assistive devices (e.g. Cane) training, to internally collaborative travel (public ways and public transit) trainings, employment and benefits counseling, housing needs, specialized assistive technologies and other independent living skills available through CIL specialized staff resources at our Berkeley headquarters. Where appropriate, CIL collaborates with outside agencies to provide links to medical and psychiatric care social work, on-going education and other needs as assessed and described in the goal setting during the creation of an independent Living Plan.

We provide Blind/Low Vision direct services through:

  • 1 on 1 counseling
  • Benefits- SSI/SSDI navigation assistance

  • Information and referrals to Blind/Low Vision Agencies in the community
